Dry Vagina

A dry vagina can affect many Post-Menopausal women and is a cause of discomfort and avoidance of sexual intercourse. Often this will result in relationship problems.

If the cause of a dry vagina is due to lack of oestrogen in the vagina this is easily solved by using topical oestrogens in the vagina. There are many preparations available, and no woman should have to suffer from this problem.

Non hormonal preparations are also available that are non-prescription, and are useful for all ages.

There are of course other causes of a dry vagina that are not related to just low oestrogen. Irritant dermatitis, Lichen Sclerosis, Extra Mammary Paget’s disease. These diseases affect the vulva, and are better diagnosed by a Consultant Dermatologist specialising in this area of medicine.

25% of women using HRT often need topical oestrogens.

A good loving sexual relationship often results in good vaginal lubrication and therefore a dry vagina might not be a problem. Good sexual arousal and enough time for foreplay will aid lubrication, but sometimes initial penetration is uncomfortable and a lubricant is necessary.
